Giovanni da Bologna, known as Giambologna, was a major artist of the transitional period between the Renaissance and Baroque eras and a master pupil of Michelangelo. His art blends local and classical influences, with large bronze and marble sculptures as well as delicate statuettes being central elements of his work. After training with Jacques Dubroeucq in Mons, he settled in Florence and became court sculptor to the Medici. Giambologna's works were highly sought after throughout Europe, granting him a unique status. He received numerous honors, including the Order of Christ from the Pope and ennoblement by the Emperor. Until his death in 1608, he served the Medici family tirelessly in Florence.
