Garden sculpture "Sun, Moon and Earth", bronze

Since Einstein, we have known what keeps suns, planets, and moons in their orbits: the universal force of gravity. This has advanced our scientific understanding, but without a doubt, the old explanations were far more poetic. For example, when they interpreted the harmonious orbit as a "dance of the universe," revolving in an eternal circle around our central star.

Beth Newman-Maguire finds the image of a ballerina in basic position to describe this sequence. In the next moment, it seems, she begins her dance – and thus sets the mechanics of the world in motion.
