Paul Wunderlich is one of the stylish artists of modernity. His works were confiscated as "offensive" in 1960, but three years later he received a professorship at the University of Fine Art. He achieved international recognition with awards such as the Edwin Scharff Prize and his admission to the Paris Académie des Beaux-Art. Born in 1927 in Eberswalde, studied Wunderlich Grafik and quickly became a drawing teacher on his Alma Mater. Influential encounters with artists such as Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka shaped his idiosyncratic style, which combines mannerist and surrealistic elements. His topics initially spanned German history before turning erotic motifs, which accompanied him until the prosecutor in 1960. In the 1960s he worked heavily with photographs by Karin Székessy and increasingly devoted himself to everyday sculptural objects. Paul Wunderlich lived and worked alternately in Hamburg and France until his death in June 2010.
