About Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) - German painter and draftsman: Carl Spitzweg was one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier. He created numerous pictures, oil studies, drawings and watercolors, whose strange, bizarre savings attracted him the most popular representative of bourgeois genre and landscape painting in southern Germany. Spitzweg came from a wealthy Munich merchant family and initially successfully completed a scientific degree. An illness brought him to the decision to become a painter. He continued to train himself and soon found connection to other colleagues from the Munich painting school such as Moritz von Schwind. Spitzweg is one of the great German painters and 19th century drawers. His most famous pictures such as "Der Päme Poet", the "Bookworm" or the "Eternal Hochziter" show specialty of the bourgeois society who indulge in their respective hobby horses. Fantasy and an outstanding painting technique paired at Carl Spitzweg with the most important addition: his humor. With wit and loving exaggeration, the die -hard bachelor studies of chewy speciallings and romantic encounters created - always lovingly and told with a wink. So he became one of the most popular German artists. He chose very small formats and described the figures precisely and in detail in their respective milieu. As a result, he achieved a satirical exaggeration of the types that extends into the grotesque. In his later work, he placed more emphasis on spontaneous, sketchy and moved, which is particularly visible in his landscape depictions. He was only discovered by art history around 1900, and throughout his life he was never as famous as other contemporary painters.
