It wasn't until 1889 that the former officer of the Tsarist army began his artistic training. In 1896, he moved to Munich to attend a private art school. There he met Wassily Kandinsky. Jawlensky first collaborated with Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter in Murnau. The idea for founding the "New Artists' Association of Munich" arose during this time. Jawlensky also belonged to the Blue Rider movement. He later founded the group "The Blue Four" with Klee, Kandinsky, and Feininger.
