“Coffee Table” by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (limited reproduction)

The treatment of Kirchner's work during the Nazi era is exemplary of National Socialist art policy: more than 600 of his paintings were removed from museums. His "Coffee Table" from 1923, with its chosen perspective, testifies to his engagement with Cubism, yet in its planar abstraction it is entirely Kirchner. It depicts the family conversation as a moment of intimate familiarity and serene tranquility, inviting the viewer to experience it, not least through its luminous, warm colors.
