The von Munch family already had a holiday home in the small town of Asgardstrand on the Oslofjord, in which the artist (1863-1944) spent his summer months. At the age of 35, he acquired his own building, which served him as a retreat until old age. Even when he had long been recognized as the most important painter of Scandinavia and won his works, which made it possible for him to buy a large property in Erkely near Oslo, he regularly returned to his modest fishing house to live and create there. The role of Asgardstrand for Munch's artistic work is of great importance. The constantly changing light and the lively colors he discovered there also influenced his range of colors in the landscape paintings of his later works. Works like "The Garden" show a Munch that, in addition to his famous masterpieces that explore and analyze the human psyche, also created work of simple but great beauty. In their importance, these works are no less revolutionary than its psychological studies - both in the color design and in the composition, Munch already anticipates expressionism here.
