Max Liebermann, along with Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt, formed the triumvirate of German Impressionism and received numerous honors throughout his life. His commitment to elevating the life and work of ordinary people to art with unpretentious simplicity initially forced Liebermann to fight for recognition. For Liebermann, nature was always also a paradise created (and inhabited) by humans. He found his subjects in gardens, parks, and bourgeois places of entertainment. Liebermann was a master of staged light, which he often refracted multiple times through a canopy of leaves, illuminating his scenes. The individual beams of light penetrating to the ground, which have entered art history as "Liebermann sunspots," are particularly striking.
