Jan Vermeer's most popular painting is the portrait "Girl with a Pearl Earring," created around 1665. Its fame stems primarily from the painting's modern appeal: the girl is depicted in close-up, without any narrative attributes, and interacts with the viewer by looking directly at them with her mouth slightly open. To this day, the identity of the girl remains unknown—perhaps the maid Griet, as described in Tracy Chevalier's novel of the same name, which was adapted into a film by British director Peter Webber in 2003 and nominated for three Oscars. Original: 1665, oil on canvas, 44.5 x 39 cm, Mauritshuis Museum, The Hague.
