In addition to Praxiteles, Leochares is the most important Greek sculptor of the late classic. He lived in the 4th century BC BC and probably came from Athens. Pliny stated his work between 370 and 320. Since little is known about his life and creating, its work can mainly only be understood on the basis of copies. The participation of the sculptor around 350 in the sculpture jewelry of the mausoleum of Halikarnassos, on the other hand, seems to be secured. According to Plinius, he is said to have made the panels with the Amazon steam frieze. However, the assignment of the role models for the "Apollo of Belvedere" and its counterpart, the "Artemis of Versailles" remains controversial.
