Sculpture “Forme Uniche della Continuitae Nello Spazio” by Umberto Boccioni, bronze version

Umberto Boccioni (1882-1918), along with Tommaso Marinetti, is considered a leading figure of Italian Futurism. In February 1910, he spearheaded the publication of the "Manifesto of Futurist Painting," in which he called upon artists to break free from outdated and traditional norms. They should dedicate themselves to a new art that corresponded to technological advancement and the futuristic future. Posthumously, Boccioni's works were exhibited at documenta I-III. Boccioni's works are characterized by a dramatically tense division of surfaces. Following the scientific principle of light, he argued that not only a moving but also a stationary object can produce an equally dynamic effect—since, fundamentally, everything is subject to the dynamics of the universe. A milestone of modern art was the sculpture "Forme Uniche della Continuitae Nello Spazio" (Unique Forms of Continuity in Space), which is one of the key works in the collection of MoMA, New York. Boccioni's sculpture is also depicted on today's Italian 20 cent coin.
