With graffiti , street art , and large-scale murals , we enter a vibrant sphere where concrete walls become the backdrop for modern narratives. Urban art can be seen as a domesticated art form for interiors, paying respectful homage to the vibrant, multifaceted, and often rebellious spirit of street artists worldwide.

In simple terms, urban wall art is graffiti art in the form of Canvas art for your home. The popularity of this subversive, colorful, and freedom-loving art form remains unbroken. Murals inspired by graffiti and street art capture the essence of urban creativity from around the world. Graffiti became popular worldwide in New York in the 1970s; today, anyone is free to pick up a spray can. You can also put it on your own wall urban wall art

In our opinion, a home should always reflect a personal style, and graffiti is a great way to achieve just that.

Graffiti as a creative component of urban culture

Graffiti art has long been a colorful part of urban environments, adding a level of expression and inventiveness to cityscapes. Street art has evolved into a powerful form of artistic expression, ranging from simple tags to complex murals, appealing to communities worldwide.

The ability of street art to dynamically and attractively transform everyday metropolises is among its most appealing qualities. Street artists often work on public walls and surfaces, turning dreary alleyways and abandoned buildings into vibrant works of art. This creative infusion can revitalize urban areas and help residents develop pride and a sense of belonging

Graffiti and street art serve numerous useful functions in large cities that extend beyond mere aesthetics. First and foremost, they provide a platform for marginalized voices, giving them a voice to be heard. Street artists often address social and political concerns, highlighting issues that would otherwise go unaddressed in their work.

Graffiti can therefore be a very effective medium for social commentary and socio-critical actions, in order to initiate important dialogues within societies.

Furthermore, graffiti art offers people unexpected places of beauty and wonder, inspiring and uplifting them in the process. In an otherwise ordinary urban scene, a spectacular mural or a provocative piece of graffiti can brighten someone's day and inspire them.

The impact of graffiti on society cannot be overstated. From its roots in the underground hip-hop scene of the 1970s to its current mainstream acceptance, graffiti has profoundly changed art, fashion, and popular culture. From design and advertising to music and film, street art has shaped the cultural landscape in countless ways.

Many elements influence graffiti art, including urban culture, music, politics, and personal experiences. Artists like Banksy , Mr. Brainwash , Shepard Fairey, Lady Pink, Keith Haring, Invader, Futura 2000 , and Jean-Michel Basquiat embody the essence of graffiti art with their progressive and emotional work. Their direct, uninhibited approach lends their works the vitality and dynamism of big-city life.

Haring's famous Pop Art graffiti, often featuring colorful babies and dancing figures, transformed metropolitan areas into vibrant canvases. While Futura 2000 spawned an avant-garde, futuristic style that pushed the boundaries of conventional graffiti, Basquiat's blend of street art and abstract expressionism the movement depth and socio-political commentary.

Messages from graffiti

Graffiti art often serves as a visual dialogue with the urban landscape and its inhabitants, reflecting a wide range of themes and emotions. It can provide a forum for marginalized voices, challenge accepted mainstream views, and offer political and social commentary.

Graffiti art has moved beyond its beginnings on the streets into galleries, auction houses, and, not least, into our private homes. British street artist Banksy, captured the attention of the global art community with his provocative and often humorous stencil works. His 2019 sculpture "Devolved Parliament," depicting the British House of Commons populated by chimpanzees, broke the record for the sale of a work by a living street artist, fetching an astonishing $12.2 million.

Just two years later, the artist broke his own record. A shredded work titled “Love is in the Bin” was auctioned for a total price of 18.5 million pounds (almost 22 million euros) in 2018.

The rise of urban art for individual room decoration

The past decades of the new millennium have seen an unprecedented acceptance of the bold lines and vibrant colors of street art in interior design . Graffiti-inspired interior design enjoys growing popularity as it transforms everyday spaces into reflections of modern society. What was once found on the outskirts of cities can now be found in our homes.

Celebrities and design influencers often set decorating trends, and graffiti is no exception. When influential figures began commissioning famous street artists to decorate their homes, a new era began for graffiti. This widespread acceptance has helped make graffiti a popular home decor element. Some of the biggest collectors and supporters of urban art include:

  • Jay-Z & Beyoncé
  • Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
  • Steve Aoki
  • Kylie Jenner
  • Kim Namjoon of the Korean pop group BTS

The energy of graffiti makes it an adaptable interior design element. This art form, whether a large mural or carefully selected focal points such as modern wall art or posters , can suit many tastes and interior design styles . Graffiti lends a sense of adventure and freedom to a room that traditional art may not be able to achieve.

Celebrities and their passion for street art

Beyoncé and Jay-Z , the ultimate celebrity power couple, love Jean-Michel Basquiat. Brooklyn-born Jay-Z paid $4.2 million for Mecca (1982) at Sotheby's in 2013. The work depicts a New York City landscape with the word "Empire" written beneath the artist's crown. Eight years later, the hip-hop duo appeared in a Tiffany & Co. commercial next to Basquiat's turquoise painting Equals Pi (1982). The painting closely resembles Tiffany's signature blue and hasn't been seen in decades, according to a post by the Maddox Gallery .

After Brad Pitt at Banksy's "Barely Legal" Angelina Jolie bought the couple's first Banksy painting for £200,000. A year later, Pitt and Jolie spent nearly £1 million on Banksy pieces at an auction in Soho. Since the couple's divorce in 2016, there has been much talk about their art collection, but no one knows the whereabouts of the Banksy works.

Steve Aoki , the fourth-highest-paid DJ in the world, collects art toys alongside vinyl records. Paintings didn't particularly interest Aoki when he first started collecting, but figurines were a natural fit for him and his friends. Aoki's house is a work of art in itself, housing original pieces by Banksy, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, RETNA, and OSGEMEOS, as well as figurines by KAWS. The KAWS Room, a museum of the New York artist's three-dimensional sculptures, displays a series of Four Foot Companions, one of his most famous creations.

Kylie Jenner , the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister, gave Architectural Digest a tour of her California estate in 2019, showcasing a stunning home adorned with contemporary art, including a Jean-Michel Basquiat in the living room. Now she has posted photos of her growing contemporary art collection on Instagram, including a full portfolio edition of Keith Haring in her home office and a KAWS chair for her daughter Stormi by Travis Scott.

Graffiti interior design has developed so well for several reasons

  • Personal expression: It offers us a platform to highlight our individuality. Graffiti makes a powerful statement and can play the main role in a space.
  • Cultural relevance: It captures an urban, modern spirit that resonates with the present. Graffiti art is becoming increasingly accessible; replicas, art prints, and posters are available even for those who cannot commission or bid on original pieces. Wall decals and photo wallpapers are also excellent mediums for incorporating street art into one's own home.
  • Given the increasing demand for do-it-yourself interior design, the individual design of a graffiti style is more obvious than ever.

Although the graffiti room decoration has a rebellious quality, its integration into the house design has been surprisingly smooth. It highlights areas and appeals to the youthful energy that resides in each of us, regardless of age.

Furthermore, graffiti art is extremely diverse. Whether it's a simple stencil or a fully realized mural , the range of styles extends from minimalist to sophisticated, allowing everyone to add a unique touch to their living spaces. You can choose pieces that appeal to your personal taste or tell a personal story, transforming a wall into a conversation starter. Perhaps you'll even learn how to create graffiti yourself.

We can expect even more creative uses of graffiti in the future, redefining our understanding of what constitutes decoration. This may be due to the increasing recognition and appreciation of urban art.

Art styles and movements

The art style or also the direction in artworks refers to the uniform expression of the artworks and cultural products of an era, an artist or an artist group, an art movement, or an art school.

This is a tool for categorising and systematising the diversity of art. It denotes similarities that distinguish it from others.

The term is thematically related to the Art Movement, but it should not be viewed solely within a temporal framework and is therefore much broader.

In this section, we would like to help you gain a better understanding of styles and movements in art.
