Sculptural living – the big sofa as an architectural statement in the room

The large sofa, or, following contemporary trends, the "big sofa ," is now almost universally familiar. Particularly from the USA, we know of numerous television series in which this piece of furniture plays a key role as the centerpiece of the living room, if not the entire apartment. It's where the protagonists meet, where daily life unfolds, with all its ups and downs.

Well-known examples include the classic "Friends" or, familiar to a slightly younger television audience, "How I Met Your Mother." Large parts of the dialogue in these shows take place on or around the large sofa that is centrally positioned in the frame.

The block-like, wide armrests and the low-profile, boxy design give the Big Sofa in the picture a grounded, solid presence.

It's not just the success of these series that has fundamentally changed the understanding of living spaces in modern interior design in recent years. The days when living areas were merely a collection of purely functional furniture are over. Today's living space is an open, artfully curated environment. It's about design language, well-considered proportions, and exquisite materials. The goal is always a harmonious overall impression.

Furniture is increasingly taking on the role of sculptural art objects without sacrificing functionality. The sofa, as the central focal point, lends the room structure, character, and visual calm. The classic living room, in particular, now demands concepts that combine impressive spaciousness with intimate comfort.

Expansive upholstered furniture and large-scale seating arrangements, combined with thoughtfully chosen home accessories, are increasingly taking center stage in this deliberate spatial design. Their striking presence significantly shapes the rhythm of a room and serves as a visual anchor point.

Thanks to its extremely low, floor-level design (lounge style), the sofa exudes pure coziness and, despite its considerable size, takes away the visual heaviness of the room.

Generous dimensions and the art of conscious living

The expansive sofa deliberately breaks with the traditional, fragmented style of conventional furnishing patterns of yesteryear. Whereas previously small three-seaters and bulky sideboards obstructed sightlines, today the thoughtfully designed big sofa creates a monolithic aesthetic in the room. With its extra-deep seats, tactilely appealing upholstery, and low-profile silhouette, the piece of furniture becomes a sensual haven.

This sofa doesn't function as a mere piece of seating furniture, but rather as a spacious "living landscape". Together with the matching armchair in the foreground, it creates an informal, communicative and inviting lounging and seating area that naturally defines the center of the room.

To further enhance the spatial arrangement, interior designers often combine expansive upholstered seating areas with delicate, freestanding pieces. Those wishing to create a sculptural seating area or perfect the interplay between opulent lounge character and ergonomic retreat will find contemporary inspiration in the realm of reclining chairs for sophisticated living concepts. The harmonious symbiosis of expansive comfort and carefully chosen accents lends a distinctive gallery atmosphere to a modern loft or an apartment with an open floor plan.

The velvety, muted antique rose or terracotta tone of this big sofa picks up on the warmth of the reddish wooden door frames and at the same time sets a strong, inviting accent in contrast to the cool, very light wooden floor.

Plenty of open space and curated sightlines

Positioning generously sized upholstered furniture requires architectural finesse and a keen sense of spatial proportions. Instead of conventionally pushing the sofa against the wall, its sculptural power truly shines when freestanding. It functions as an elegant room divider, creating distinct zones within the living, working, or dining area without compromising the open feel of the floor plan. The characteristic low backrest of a large sofa ensures that sightlines to other design elements in the living space remain unobstructed.

The piece of furniture conforms to the architectural geometry while simultaneously creating a protected space for deceleration and inspiring exchange of ideas.

Comfort and aesthetics in balance

Contemporary living completely eliminates the supposed contradiction between minimalist design and absolute comfort. The stylish oversized sofa is far more than just an ordinary seat; it's an homage to a consciously slower, more aesthetically pleasing life.
