Highlights of week 17, 2020

What art news and articles occupied us this week, or which particularly caught our attention? What were the most important topics? What perhaps stirred up the most heated debates? Here you can find our very personal weekly review:

Scouts at the edge of the forest – on the 60th birthday of Neo Rauch

Neo Rauch is an internationally renowned artist who exhibits in major museums worldwide, yet remains deeply connected to his hometown of Leipzig. As the quintessential representative of the so-called New Leipzig School, he occupies a special place in the art world. On April 18th, the painter and graphic artist celebrated his 60th birthday. MDR Kultur offered its congratulations with a tribute to his extraordinary work.

On his canvases, the artist experimented primarily with the madness of everyday life, and they often evoke melancholy in the viewer.

Photography in the Corona crisis – photographer Alec Soth travels through Minnesota in a minivan

In search of some life, photographer Alec Soth tours the US state of Minnesota in his minivan, capturing through his own camera lens what remains of everyday life after the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.

The resulting images show both closeness and distance, portraying the life of a society in a state of emergency.

Coronavirus shutdown: Museums and galleries in Berlin are preparing to reopen.

The cultural sector has been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus restrictions. The industry has been virtually brought to a standstill, and many cultural institutions and artists are facing financial ruin. Cinemas, theaters, and concert halls remain closed, even after the easing of coronavirus measures. Only museums and galleries have a glimmer of hope: they are to be allowed to reopen cautiously and under certain conditions. Preparations for this have already begun.

The rbb24 blog sheds light on the current situation in our capital city, Berlin.

Loss of the Flick Collection: Who are responsible for the failure of Berlin's cultural policy?

The loss of the highly prestigious Flick Collection was a devastating blow for many Berliners, hitting the capital on April 24th. However one views the situation and wherever one looks for those responsible, the fact that collector Friedrich Christian Flick is leaving the metropolis with his art collection is irreversible.

Swantje Karich, arts editor of WELT, attempts to identify those responsible for the failure of Berlin's cultural policy.

Garden instead of gallery: Glööckler is now a provincial, in the “Château Pompöös”

Glamorous fashion designer Harald Glööckler left his penthouse and gallery in Berlin-Mitte and embraced the romantic charm of the Wine Route, a veritable Garden of Eden. The cult designer moved from the capital to Kirchheim in the Palatinate region and promptly left his distinctive mark on his new home. A Panorama report in Die Welt revealed that the 50-year-old was clearly enjoying his new role.

Artists say thank you: Enchanting light art with drones in China

True to their futuristic vision, drones belonging to Chinese artists conjured up luminous images in the sky a few days ago. From individual words to entire firework displays, the drones illuminated the night over Zhuhai. With this action, they wanted to thank medical personnel for their service during the coronavirus pandemic in China.
