With its rich art history, dating back to the avant-garde movements of the 1920s , Berlin has played a significant role in the development of contemporary art in Europe. The atmosphere of optimism following the fall of the Berlin Wall fostered creativity and a spirit of experimentation within the art scene.

Many artists experimented with new technologies and art forms and found a place of retreat in hundreds of independent project spaces, such as the now legendary Künstlerhaus Bethanien .

In the decades since reunification, Berlin has therefore developed into a true mecca for art lovers and is now considered by many art insiders to be the leading art city, even ahead of New York. Anyone wanting to discover Berlin's vibrant art scene with its more than a thousand galleries should definitely plan to spend several days there.

For shorter and longer stays, it is no problem to find an apartment in the capital on platforms like Rentola.de and to explore the art scene in peace and quiet and enjoy variety of galleries

Nierendorf Gallery

Founded in 1920 by Wolfgang Nierendorf, the gallery is Berlin's oldest private gallery and has a long history of presenting modern and contemporary art, with a focus on expressionist works. Artists such as Max Beckmann, Dalí, Miró , Picasso , Kandinsky , and Kirchner have exhibited at its Hardenbergstrasse location, attracting art lovers from all over the world.

Visitors to the Nierendorf Gallery can immerse themselves in a special atmosphere, characterized by the long history and unique charm of the rooms.

Unique + Type

Eigen + Art has become an important part of the Berlin art scene, but also has a major influence on the development of contemporary art in Germany and beyond.

The gallery was founded in Leipzig in 1983 by Gerd Harry Lybke. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he moved to Berlin and now has two locations in the city. Over the past decades, Eigen + Art has supported many important artists, including Martin Eder, Neo Rauch, Olaf Nicolai, and Tim Eitel. Many of these artists gained international recognition through their Berlin exhibitions and are now represented in major museums and collections worldwide.

Today, the gallery is not only a platform for contemporary art, but also a place for exchanging ideas about current trends in the art world. Regular lectures and discussions promote an understanding of contemporary art and facilitate dialogue between artists, collectors, and art lovers.

Auguststrasse, 26, 10117 Berlin

Michael Haas Gallery

The gallery has also set itself the goal of building a bridge between classical modernism and contemporary art, thus enabling a dialogue between past and present.

Michael Haas first made a name for himself in the 1970s as an expert on Expressionist artists such as Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde , and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner . His concept is to present important works by artists of Classical Modernism alongside young representatives of contemporary art. In his exhibitions, he has repeatedly been a key supporter of the Neue Wilde (New Wild Ones) generation, from Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer to Jörg Immendorff.

Niebuhrstrasse, 5, 10629 Berlin

Barbara Thumm Gallery

The gallery in Kreuzberg is an essential destination for all fans of contemporary art. From the most renowned artists to emerging talents, it offers a fascinating selection of artistic expressions. Barbara Thumm's aim is to promote artists from around the world who possess a strong and individual artistic voice, focusing not only on photography and painting, but also on large-scale installations and sculptures .

The gallery offers visitors the opportunity to discover the creative diversity of artists such as Mona Hatoum, Rosemarie Trockel, Rebecca Horn, Ceal Floyer and Tomás Saraceno.

Markgrafenstrasse, 19, 10969 Berlin

Meyer-Riegger Gallery

The art gallery, housed in a former factory building in Wilmersdorf , was founded in Karlsruhe and has been based in Berlin since 2005. Meyer-Riegger has made a name for herself by promoting exciting avant-garde artists who are not yet in the limelight and surprise with their experimental works.

The long list of established artists who have exhibited here includes John Armleder, Ceal Floyer, Rodney Graham, and Tobias Rehberger, to name just a few. The gallery has also supported young and emerging artists such as Alicja Kwade and Florian Meisenberg, undoubtedly contributing to their international careers.

Schaperstrasse, 14, 10719 Berlin

C/O Berlin

Since 2000, the former Charlottenburg post office has housed a 2,000-square-meter exhibition space showcasing photography and visual media of the highest caliber. The exhibitions range from established artists such as Annie Leibovitz and Helmut Newton to young, up-and-coming talents.

With its experimental and innovative approach, C/O Berlin continually sets new standards and impresses with its creative and inspiring exhibitions. If you're looking for a place where you can be enchanted by the magic of photography, then you should definitely add C/O Berlin to your list. An absolute highlight for any visit to Berlin!
