Many employees spend numerous hours at their desks – this can negatively impact posture, circulation, and energy levels. In this article, we'll explore how regular standing breaks during the workday, using a height-adjustable desk, can alleviate discomfort, improve concentration, and support your long-term health. But how often should you stand, and what's the best way to do it?

Before you start taking sit-stand breaks, you should calculate the correct desk height. Only at the right height will your arms, back, and screen be at the correct angle to each other when standing or sitting. This way, you avoid incorrect settings negating the positive effects of the movement.

The health risks of sitting for too long

Prolonged sitting is linked to several health problems – even if you exercise regularly. Common problems include:

  • Poor circulation and swollen legs
  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Strain on lower back and neck
  • Fatigue and concentration problems

These risks develop slowly, even if you don't feel any pain at first. Early signs can include stiffness, difficulty concentrating, or restless legs. Over time, too much sitting can cause permanent problems that are harder to treat.

What is the right balance between sitting and standing?

There's no exact rule, but many health experts recommend two hours of sitting for every one hour of standing. Ideally, you should spread your standing time into shorter segments throughout the day.

Working period  Seating time  Standing time
1 hour  40 minutes  20 minutes
2 hours  80 minutes  40 minutes
Whole day  4 to 5 hours  2 to 4 hours

You don't have to stick to a strict schedule. The important thing is to stay flexible and listen to your body. Some people like to stand in the morning when their energy is at its peak, while others use short standing breaks to overcome the afternoon slump. Instead of standing still for long periods, try changing your position frequently.

Here's how to build a healthier sit-stand routine

Switching to a sit-stand routine doesn't require major changes. Focus on small, steady steps throughout the day.

Start with short sessions

Start with 10 to 15 minutes of standing per hour. You can gradually increase the time once your body has adjusted to the change.

Regular reminders set

Use alarm clocks, apps, or calendar reminders to help you remember to get up or move around.

Combine standing with light tasks

Tasks such as video calls, reading emails or taking notes are well suited for standing.

Support for feet and legs

Comfortable shoes or a standing mat can make standing more pleasant and reduce leg fatigue. Over time, these habits will become second nature. If possible, adjust your monitor height or use a desk riser for added comfort. The goal is consistency, not perfection!

Is it possible to stand for too long?

Yes, absolutely. Standing for long periods without breaks can also cause problems. Common issues include:

  • Tired feet and knees
  • Tension in the lower back
  • Poor circulation, especially in the legs

The goal is a balance between sitting and standing. Moving around regularly and not remaining still is the key to greater well-being at your desk.

Why a height-adjustable desk helps

A height-adjustable desk lets you change position effortlessly. At the touch of a button, you can adjust the desk to the right height for your current task. This allows you to move around more without interrupting your work.

Many modern desks offer features such as memory settings, quiet motors, and safety sensors. These help you switch smoothly and easily between sitting and standing.

If the desk is easy to adjust, people will actually use it regularly. Even short changes throughout the day can improve posture and increase concentration.
