Although ghostwriters always operate anonymously in the background and often only implement the ideas of the named authors, they nevertheless exert a significant influence, consciously or unconsciously, on the content that ultimately serves as the basis for the final product.

This is especially true if professional help from ghostwriters has been used, which is happening more and more frequently in the German film and television industry.

are thus significantly changing Germany and its domestic media landscape, often without the viewer even realizing it. This is a fact one must first grasp when approaching this topic.

Because screenplays for films, dialogues for television shows, and texts for documentary segments are prepared by ghostwriters. Thus, ghostwriters no longer only offer help in formulating ideas, but also in finding new content.

They conduct the research and adapt complex content to the specific format. This trend is unstoppable, as viewers are expected to be offered more and more content at an ever-increasing pace. Consequently, companies offering ghostwriting services are booming due to high demand.

International success through ghostwriting in the film industry

More than a decade ago, investigative journalists revealed that famous Hollywood blockbusters such as “The Hunger Games” and “50 Shades of Grey” were described as being ghostwritten by one and the same author.

These days, no one hides the fact that even the screenplays for famous German films were written with the help of ghostwriters.

Perhaps it's also because the domestic film industry is once again enjoying international success. The question is whether we should consider this reprehensible or whether it's perfectly normal. Those in favor agree that it's only natural that someone with an idea for a film or show isn't necessarily good at articulating it.

Instead, the originator of an idea explains it to a ghostwriting service and answers all their questions. The writer then transforms the intellectual achievement into a form that can be used as a screenplay for a film or television show. But there's another argument for this.

Should we acknowledge the influence of ghostwriters?

The discussion then shifts to whether ghostwriters should step out of the shadows in film and television. After all, everyone understands their significant influence on content. Even in a simple translation of a book from English, the translator determines how certain passages are perceived by the reader.

Just imagine how much greater the influence of the actual author is on the original idea of the creator of a piece of content. That's why the media are currently debating to what extent the identities of those behind such texts should be disclosed.

Public broadcasters like ARD or ZDF, , must ask themselves these questions and also take political responsibility for them:

  • Should the ghostwriter be credited in the end credits?
  • Is it responsible to continue withholding such information?
  • Who earns a larger share of the added value of the final product?

The role of the ghostwriter as a representative of Germany

It is also questionable how far we should entrust the cultural representation of German content to an unknown ghostwriter behind the scenes. After all, films from Germany are now available worldwide via the internet. Even local restrictions can easily be bypassed using a VPN

watching content from German television and films from German productions

It is therefore all the more important to maintain control over the messages conveyed in the content. Especially in times like these, when Germany plays a pioneering role worldwide in many areas, such as transgender rights, veganism, climate protection, and many others. But how can we ensure that our values are upheld even when using a ghostwriting service?

The simplest solution is probably obvious. Public broadcasters and media outlets should be required to employ only domestic ghostwriters. As a second step, it would then need to be clarified whether the identities of ghostwriters must be disclosed wherever taxpayers are involved.

Conclusion on the cultural analysis of ghostwriters in the media

Ghostwriting is definitely a topic that isn't openly discussed in the German film and television industry. Many still consider it a form of cheating when a ghostwriting service helps inspiring films

However, it has long been common practice internationally for many media outlets to seek the help of ghostwriters to ensure higher content quality. It's time the German film and television industry also addressed this issue in a public discussion.
