Internationally acclaimed photographer Eva Rubinstein celebrated her 93rd birthday on August 18th. The art city of Düsseldorf is now honoring the artist's extraordinary life's work with a two-part exhibition project, a book launch , and a film screening.
Her personal biography reads like a screenplay, forging a fascinating link between the European pre-war bohemia, the glamour of
Hollywood exile, and the global photography scene. As the eldest daughter of the legendary piano virtuoso Arthur Rubinstein and Nela Młynarska, Eva Rubinstein grew up in a household deeply rooted in cultural history.
In the fall of 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, the then six-year-old and her family left Europe aboard the USS George Washington. It was the abrupt beginning of a new chapter in their lives in exile in the United States. The family eventually settled in Beverly Hills, California. Their home quickly became an interdisciplinary salon where Hollywood legends like Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, and Grace Kelly, as well as literary and scientific luminaries such as Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein, gathered.
Amidst this creative environment, Eva Rubinstein also strove for her own artistic expression. She initially enjoyed success as a ballet dancer and
Broadway actress (including in the original cast of "The Diary of Anne Frank"), before finding her true calling at the end of the 1960s at the age of 34: photography.

Photography, more definitive than handwriting and more lasting than dreams, can bring to light the deepest and most fundamental questions of our lives.”
Rubinstein developed a distinctive visual language, almost exclusively in black and white. Her works are an exploration of what she herself "third dimension" —the fusion of visible reality and deep, invisible emotions. Her work, which can now be found in important collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, can be divided into three main themes.
Firstly, there is the intimate portrait. She always treated people with the utmost respect and a desire to establish a genuine emotional connection. Her intimate photographs of her father playing music, as well as portraits of fellow artists such as Diane Arbus and Robert Frank, are famous.

Another characteristic element of her work is the interiors : deserted, empty rooms such as unmade beds or windows backlit by the sun, which are often interpreted by art experts as an expression of a 'silent melancholy'

From 1958 onwards, she also went in search of traces in Poland, the homeland of her parents, and shaped the photographic art scene there with her American style, especially in Łódź, the birthplace of her father.
A tribute in Düsseldorf
To mark her 93rd birthday, Düsseldorf is honoring the artist with a diverse program. The Clara Maria Sels is presenting an exclusive preview of her works as well as the 290-page publication "Eva Rubinstein. Photography," a tribute that combines photographs from 1967 to 1995
with personal interviews.
The book is accompanied by the documentary "A conversation with Eva Rubinstein" by New York director Renate Aller, who will be present at the film premiere.
The museum highlight is the opening of the exhibition “Eva Rubinstein. Proof of Life” at the Museum of Garden Art at Benrath Palace, which will feature around 150 vintage prints made and signed by the artist herself.
Even though Eva Rubinstein will no longer be making the journey from New York in person, she will be present at the openings via live video link – a
moving moment for an artist who has documented the 20th century with her camera in such a unique way.
