Art as a tool for social and emotional learning at university

For universities, education not simply about imparting knowledge. That would be far too simplistic. Therefore, it's not called knowledge training, but rather studying.

Because studying as education should go hand in hand with the holistic personal development of the students.

Just think back to ancient times , when students lived with their teachers to achieve this goal. In a way, this can still be practiced on campus today.

When art comes into play

This is where art comes into play. It should play a fundamental role in emotional and social learning at university. Nowadays, science has even been able to demonstrate how much more easily we humans can retain knowledge when it has an emotional connection.

We can remember things that are important to us and that interest us more easily. This makes it clear what role art can play in studying.

It's not just about admiring and learning about art, but also about creating artworks of all kinds. That's where the social component comes into play. Many people initially think of paintings or sculptures, but any other creative task can be used in this way:

  • Compositions of musical pieces
  • Writing plays
  • Multimedia presentations
  • Collages of all kinds
  • Creative Marketing
  • Film projects
  • Podcasts on specific topics
  • Designing magazines or journals

We are referring here to artistic texts ranging from poems and short stories to novels, crime fiction, and also essays on all sorts of topics currently being studied. Many students appreciate the support offered by the internet for publishing their work.

You can even work as a ghostwriter or hire one to optimize your research findings for online publication. After all, you'll never again have the opportunity to delve into specific topics as intensively and undisturbed as you do during your studies. This can be a significant asset for many industries.

Double benefit and everyone wins

Let's consider a practical example. A teacher assigns a student (or student, as they are currently called) a homework assignment on the topic of turbulence at radiation nozzles. To solve this problem, the student gathers an entire team of students at the university.

This creates a social form of learning and studying, because the participants in the university research group not only explore the topic itself. They also have to get along with each other and learn to deal with differing opinions. The researchers experience that apparent facts are perceived completely differently from different perspectives and by different people.

This is precisely the kind of personality development we mentioned at the beginning. Through creative group projects, students learn to exchange ideas and collaborate. This, along with other valuable skills, benefits the economy later on, as it fosters the development of bright minds who work well in teams.

The results of student group research at universities can often be applied in practice. This is already the case, which is why it is so important nowadays that these findings are published online in an optimal way.

It doesn't matter much if a ghostwriter helps to put the many structured data and results into a readable format for the internet. Fortunately, even as a student, you don't have to do everything yourself anymore.

Further development of teaching methods at universities

That is why it is so important that teachers at universities increasingly recognize art as a versatile opportunity .

They use these in their teaching and devise creative tasks to support students in independently and collaboratively acquiring knowledge.

All of this can be incorporated into the existing curriculum if the teachers are willing to do so.

Such projects thus replace traditional homework, which often only causes boredom among students and is seen as a tiresome obligation. Instead, students suddenly work on projects they look forward to and where they enjoy collaborating towards a common goal.

Teachers can utilize the full range of options, from research tasks, as in the example above, to creating artwork, composing musical pieces , collaborative painting, and much more. Each of these tasks makes the lessons and the education itself much more attractive and interesting for the students, resulting in significantly more information being retained in the long term.

Conclusion on art as a tool for social and emotional learning

At this point, you should already have realized that there are absolutely no limits to creativity in this regard. Anyone who believes that this concept can only be implemented in certain subjects is sorely mistaken.

Each subject offers countless opportunities to inspire students with creative homework and collaborative projects, inspiring them to never forget the topic.

Therefore, it is undoubtedly a great idea and extremely effective to use art, in whatever form, for social and emotional learning.

This could significantly improve our university education system for both students and teachers, and take it to a whole new level.
