UV inks?

UV colors are colors that glow under the influence of ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light has higher energy than visible light and is invisible to the human eye. When UV light strikes a fluorescent substance, some of the energy is absorbed and converted into visible light, causing the fluorescent substance to glow.

The special properties of UV paints are based on a phenomenon called fluorescence. When a molecule absorbs UV light, an electron is raised to a higher energy level. However, the electron quickly returns to its original state, releasing the absorbed energy in the form of visible light.

The color of the emitted light depends on the type of fluorescent molecule.

Most UV paints contain fluorescent pigments or dyes dissolved in a binder. This binder can be applied to various materials such as paper, textiles, or plastic. When the UV paint is exposed to ultraviolet light, the fluorescent pigments glow, producing a vibrant color.

Some of these colors are invisible in normal light and can only be seen by us with the help of UV light.

The Enlightenment in the 1930s

Blacklight paints were first developed in the 1930s and were very popular 1960s during the hippie movement

The development of UV paints began in the 1930s when the German chemist Wilhelm Normann discovered a fluorescent substance that glowed under UV light. In the following years, various fluorescent substances were discovered and developed that could serve as the basis for UV paints.

UV paints became popular in the USA during the 1960s due to the hippie movement. They were used at psychedelic concerts and raves to create a unique atmosphere. UV paints were also used in the art world to make works glow .

In the following years, blacklight inks were further developed and improved. Today, they are used in many different fields, from the security industry to the arts and entertainment industry. For example, they are used to secret markings to prevent counterfeiting or to mark banknotes .

UV paints are also popular at parties, raves, and festivals for creating unique atmospheres. Furthermore, they are used in the theater and film industries to achieve special effects and highlight specific scenes.

A different dimension of color!

Without UV light

Compared to other paints for fine art, UV paints have some unique properties. But they don't have to be solitary.

Especially when combined with other colors, an impressive depth effect can be created.

One of the advantages of UV paints is their luminosity and brightness , especially when viewed under ultraviolet light. This makes them ideal for artistic effects where a vibrant and luminous interplay of colors is desired.

Another advantage of UV inks is their durability and resistance to fading and wear. This makes them a popular choice for outdoor use and in harsh environments.

However, UV paints also have some disadvantages. For example, they can be more expensive than other paints. Furthermore, both the artist and the viewer need an additional UV lamp to properly showcase the colors and admire their full vibrancy.

Of course, there are many other types of paints for fine art, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, gouache, and pastels. Each type of paint has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice often depends on the specific technique the artist is using and the desired effect.

For example, watercolors are well-suited for soft, transparent effects and can be applied in many layers. Acrylic paints are ideal for quick, colorful work, while oil paints require a long drying time and can produce a smooth, luminous surface. Pastel paints are ideal for soft, subtle effects, while gouache paints can achieve an opaque, matte finish.

Here you can learn more about acrylic paints, watercolors, and more.

Ultimately, choosing the right color for a work of art is often a matter of the artist's preference and experience. However, using UV paints can be a way to add extra dimension and effects to a piece of art.

Why are UV colors so fascinating?

UV inks are so fascinating because they offer a way to present artwork in a surprising and captivating way. Here are the reasons at a glance:

  1. Vibrant colors: UV inks offer the possibility of creating particularly vibrant colors that are not always visible under normal light. This can provide a unique visual experience.
  2. Interactive art: UV paints require a special light source to glow, making them an interactive art form. The audience must view the artwork under UV light to experience the full effect.
  3. Unforgettable experience: UV colors can offer an unforgettable experience for the audience by creating a special atmosphere and transporting the viewer to another world.
  4. Diverse application possibilities: UV paints can be used in various art fields, from traditional art forms such as oil paintings to modern techniques such as graffiti and street art.

Overall, UV paints offer a unique way to present artwork and captivate the viewer. Artists can unleash their creativity and use UV paints to create unique and fascinating works of art.

Are UV paints dangerous?

There is no direct danger from the colors themselves. However, there are some potential concerns regarding their use. Some UV colors contain chemical components that can be irritating when applied or in contact with the skin.

It is important to use UV inks safely and according to the manufacturer's instructions to avoid unwanted reactions. Artists should therefore handle them with care; there is no danger to viewers of artworks using UV inks .

    Art styles and movements

The art style or also the direction in artworks refers to the uniform expression of the artworks and cultural products of an era, an artist or an artist group, an art movement, or an art school.

This is a tool for categorising and systematising the diversity of art. It denotes similarities that distinguish it from others.

The term is thematically related to the Art Movement, but it should not be viewed solely within a temporal framework and is therefore much broader.

In this section, we would like to help you gain a better understanding of styles and movements in art.
