What are engravings and how can they be created?

Engraving is a popular way to add personal messages, names, or designs to a wide variety of objects. Whether it's jewelry, trophies, signs, or even Watches , an engraving gives each piece a unique touch .

An engraving is a permanent marking or decoration applied to a surface using various methods. One of the most common methods is laser engraving , in which a laser beam precisely engraves into the material. This creates a highly precise and detailed result that can be used on both metal and wood.

Another option is to use a branding iron to create an engraving on wood or other materials. A special stamp is heated and pressed onto the material to create a permanent engraving. This technique is particularly well-suited for wooden products such as signs, trophies, or watch cases.

Engravings can be used in a variety of ways. For one, they can be used to create personalized gifts. A watch with the recipient's name or a trophy engraved with a special date are just a couple of examples of how an engraving can make a gift truly unique.

But engravings can also be used for professional lettering or marking. Signs for businesses, name badges, or even product labels are just some of the applications where engravings prove their functionality. There are numerous providers offering engraving services.

Variety of possibilities: materials, designs & more

materials

In summary, a wide variety of materials can be engraved, including metals, glass, wood, plastic, and stone. Each material has its own properties and is suitable for different applications.

Designs, patterns and motifs

Which font is suitable for engraving?

The sans-serif font Arial is also a good choice for engravings, as it appears clean and precise. Another font suitable for engraving is classic script. Beautiful script fonts such as “Kalligraphia” or “Sverige Script” give the engraving an elegant and ornate look.

These fonts add an artistic touch and are particularly suitable for special occasions such as weddings or anniversaries.

The price for engraving each letter varies depending on the provider. There is no fixed standard fee, as various factors must be taken into account.

For example, the price may depend on the type of material to be engraved, the desired font, the size of the letters, and the number of letters to be engraved.

Some providers charge between €1 and €10 for letter engraving. It's common for the price per letter to decrease as more letters are engraved. Often, there are also package deals or special offers that reduce the cost per letter.

  • a) Electric engraving pen
  • b) Laser
  • c) Milling
  • d) Manual tool
  • e) Engraving stamp

Laser engraving

Laser engraving is a modern method for engraving a wide variety of materials with exceptional detail and precision. This advanced technique uses laser beams to create patterns on the surface. The beam acts like a chisel, carving the pattern into a deep, dark incision.

The patterns are precise – and this technique requires minimal user interaction. It requires a special machine that projects the laser beam. When this beam hits the surface, it burns, vaporizing the surface layer and turning it into smoke.

Tools you will need:

There are various types of laser engraving machines , from simple to advanced. Ideally, you would have a small laser machine for your DIY projects, but other tabletop models are also available.

These laser engraving Terms & Conditions are equipped with different mechanisms. The basic idea is to connect it to a smartphone/computer to provide the image.

To ensure safe laser engraving, you should protect your eyes with tinted glasses . Most DIY laser devices include protective eyewear.

Method / Application:

  • Your laser engraver may require some minor assembly. Please refer to the manual and familiarize yourself with its operation.
  • Install the app/software on your phone or computer to connect the device to the laser machine. This software/app should send the image/design to the device.
  • Place the laser machine on the table and insert the material to be engraved. Switch on the laser and let the device engrave the pattern onto the surface.

Here is a video that shows how the laser engraving machine could work.

Manual engraving tool

For carving, and to a limited extent for engraving, you can use manual tools such as a swivel knife, a chisel, and a scraper. Most beginners start with a swivel tool. Make sure it is sharp enough to penetrate the surface you are working on.

Stamp

You can also stamping tools to contour and shade the surface and create variations. However, this is not a recommended tool in the early stages of engraving.

Don't forget to use a pen to draw a pattern.

Embossing and debossing also belong to this category and are particularly relevant in leatherwork.

Embossing and debossing Embossing raises the pattern to the surface, while debossing penetrates the surface.

A tool must be used to press the design into the leather. This entire process is commonly referred to as embossing. It can also be described as a stamping method. Interestingly, embossing or stamping can also be part of other engraving methods, particularly carving.

Tools you will need:

There are various types of stamping tools or steel plates you can use. They carry patterns and are pressed onto the substrate. The design appears on its surface.

You will also need a texturing hammer. It's also called a stamping hammer, leather hammer, or gunsmith's hammer. It's used to strike the stamp to apply pressure. For professional work, modern leather stamping machines, hydraulic presses, etc., are used. But you don't necessarily need these.

02. Select material for engraving

If you are not yet familiar with engraving, it is recommended to start with softer materials.

Why? The tool is relatively easy to use on these materials, making it ideal for beginners.

Metals such as brass and copper are among the easiest materials to work with (titanium bracelet watches should therefore be disregarded for now, until you have gained more experience!).

Other soft materials, such as leather, plastic and wood, also offer an optimal basis for first engraving attempts.

03. Focus on the form

When engraving, it's important to consider not only the material but also the shape of the surface. Whether it's soft metal, leather, or wood – the right shape is crucial.

It is recommended that beginners start with flat surfaces.

The advantage? You don't have to worry about the angle or constantly reposition the object or tool. The important thing is to first familiarize yourself with the tool and learn how it feels when engraving.

Glass coasters, metal plaques, and wooden breakfast boards are ideal starting points. Another good option is engraving a leather mobile phone case.

4. Safety measures

If you have the right tools and a surface you want to decorate, your safety should be your first priority. To avoid injuries, you should wear leather gloves, which not only protect against cuts and scratches but are also very durable.

When engraving, it is also essential to wear safety goggles and a dust mask to prevent inhaling glass or metal splinters and to protect your eyes.

If the antique serving platter shows signs of rust, it's advisable not to work on it with the engraving tool. Rust particles can be harmful to your health and should be avoided. Once you've taken care of your safety, you can focus entirely on beautifying the surface.

05. Prepare materials

For successful glass engraving, it is essential that the material is absolutely clean and dry. Any residue of grease and cleaning agents must be thoroughly removed to ensure a clear view and prevent problems during the transfer of the design.

If you want to engrave wood, it's advisable to choose untreated wood. However, if you intend to engrave varnished wood, you must first sand it and wipe it with a damp cloth. Once your surface is perfectly clean and dry, you're ready to begin your engraving.

06. Transfer pattern/design onto the material

It is possible to do the engraving freehand, however a pre-made template can serve as an excellent starting point.

To transfer the pattern onto a metal surface, carbon paper can be used. Simply place the carbon paper between the pattern and the metal and then trace over it with a pencil.

Engraving glass is even easier: if the template is placed under the glass, it can be traced directly from above. However, it is absolutely essential that the template is secured to the glass to prevent it from slipping during engraving.
