Are you trying to create a festive atmosphere during the Christmas season? That's great! Traditions aren't the only thing that can help; you can even benefit from art at Christmas time:

If you haven't yet considered observing Christmas traditions, and are even wondering whether traditions are necessary, this article will probably be of little interest to you.

Unless you allow yourself to be inspired by the following thoughts: Tradition , that is, the passing on or transmission of knowledge, is not opposed to innovations, but only seeks to preserve what has been developed in terms of valuable cultural achievements.

Tradition is part of the cultural heritage of a social group; if traditions were not passed on, our subtleties in dealing with each other would be limited to the instincts that are innate to us.

Therefore, we all pass on certain beliefs, patterns of behavior, and instructions, and feel good about doing so because this transmission is part of life in a community. Even highly developed animals like crows or great apes pass on traditions and thus form cultures, although this transmission occurs in somewhat more complex structures among us humans.

To put it simply: traditions are good for our mood, and a special mood is precisely what a beautiful and harmonious Christmas celebration should promote.

Basically, we all know this; even staunch opponents of tradition begin to pay attention to traditions at the latest when they become parents – there is probably little disagreement that children become a little happier at Christmas through the observance of Christmas traditions.

If you haven't yet thought of creating your own personal Christmas traditions , this article will surely interest you: It aims to do nothing more than provide you with many beautiful and quirky, crazy and unusual suggestions for inventing your very own Christmas traditions.

Art is therefore well suited to be used for the creation of one's own unusual Christmas traditions, because art is the area in which imagination can be freely expressed, and thus also the area that can give all creative people probably the widest range of inspiration.

Providing suggestions for newlyweds is certainly among the most difficult, as if the two stay together in the future, they are establishing traditions for a lifetime. Furthermore, it's not always guaranteed that creativity will be given the most space in the intimate setting of a relationship: Take, for example, a very young couple in love; it's highly likely that neither of them will be even remotely willing to risk embarrassing themselves in front of the other with a crazy activity.

A third difficulty arises from the fact that creating art as a couple (as opposed to creating art in a group) doesn't automatically lead to an outstanding event. Therefore, perhaps the best suggestion for couples is to initially explore art created by others—specifically, a particular area of art that appeals to both you and your partner.

You can establish a tradition by attending a very special art event together every Christmas, or you can hire an artist to collaborate with you on a project. Of course, your tradition will also need a suitable setting, from a specially crafted cocktail before the event to a fine meal afterward.

If you live in the city, you'll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy art around Christmastime , and you'll also be able to contact a number of young artists who would be happy to collaborate with you on something unusual. In the countryside, you might not have quite as many options, but you'll usually have better access to local artists.

Knowledge of the nearest artist workshop that could contribute to your personal Christmas tradition.

If you want to involve children, it's quite easy: you can basically come up with anything; if the activity itself promises fun, the children will willingly participate. For example, you can foster your children's artistic development early on by making lots of exceptionally decorated cookies together, which can then become more and more beautiful and intricate over the years.

A theme that can evolve can also emerge if you all make art for the Christmas tree together, or if you come up with a very personal kind of costume for Christmas: If the children are still small, then the Christmas dinosaurs can make an appearance, the older the children get, the more historical the theme becomes, in any case, making the costumes in the run-up to Christmas is a lot of fun.

Such themes are wonderfully feasible if you are lucky enough to gather a family with representatives from several generations around the Christmas tree. If older people are present, ideas involving self-composed music or other types of performances will usually be well received.

You don't necessarily have to learn to play instruments or write pieces yourself; a wonderful tradition can also develop if you accompany a famous rock concert every year on a self-made edition of recycled percussion instruments, or rehearse and perform a really funny cabaret piece with distributed roles.

Of course, culinary traditions are a great way to make Christmas a little different, and you can certainly come up with something more than just a fondue alternative to sausages and potato salad.

Even with fondue, there is meat fondue, broth fondue, fish fondue, cheese fondue, and chocolate fondue, and there are also many other special dishes that could enrich your Christmas celebration.

Don't worry if your Christmas idea seems a little crazy at first; the most unusual traditions often have the longest and most successful lifespans. What's more important is whether you can imagine celebrating this Christmas tradition with the same enthusiasm in 20 years as you did at the beginning.
