Stamping Art – The art of stamping in artistic forms

Stamps are essentially simple artistic tools: Apply some ink or paint, press them onto a surface, and you have a picture. You can create and order stamps online at stempelservice.de .

But the way mixed-media artists create and use stamps is anything but simple. Stamps can be used to create embossed images, designs can be altered with watercolors and acrylic paint, and patterns can be stamped into clay, plastic, or gesso to create impressions and add texture.

Create unique designs by hand-carving rubber, using found objects for stamping, or drawing in craft foam. In the hands of an artist, there are no limits to what's possible with a stamp.

Use the following tips and techniques in your next project and gain a whole new perspective on stamping.

Joan Bess: Gelli Plate Printing

The use of rubber stamp images in monoprinting leads to stunning results.

In her book “Gelli Plate Printing: Mixed-Media Monoprinting Without a Press” Joan Bess describes the process: Stamp the images you want to use onto sheets of sticky note paper, then cut them out and lightly cut into the image.

Next, stamp the same images onto a sheet of paper and cover each image with the corresponding mask. Create a monoprint on the paper using a Gelli Arts printing plate, leaving the masks in place.

Create a multi-layered print if needed, making sure the masks stay in place. Once you've finished printing, remove the masks for the grand reveal!

Dina Wakeley: Layered Stamping

Have you ever stamped a focus image onto a surface only to find that part of it didn't print? Dina Wakley understands your pain. In her webinar, "Layered and Stamped Images," she shared one of her tips for foolproof stamping.

First, cover watercolor paper with layers of paint, stencils, and acrylic-painted stamp images, and let it dry. Then, stamp images with permanent ink onto the white, uncoated paper tissue.

Dina prefers a mix of focus images (flowers, faces, people, etc.) and background images (textures, text, dots, etc.).

Next, cut out the images and adhere them to your surface using gel medium. Overlap some of them with the previously stamped images to create a layered effect. Cover with another layer of gel medium.

The combination of lightweight paper and gel medium makes the fabric disappear into the background.

Elite Hart: Embossed Metal

Embossed metal looks stunning in any mixed-media project – jewelry, handmade books, collages and more.

To create these embossed designs, check your stamp collection. In the July/August 2015 issue of "Cloth Paper Scissors" , Elitia Hart demonstrated the technique using a large floral stamp, stamping with permanent ink onto 36-thickness tin-coated paper.

Once the ink is dry, place the metal on a thin foam mat and trace the lines of the image with a Teflon pen. Turn the sheet over so the reverse side is facing up and lightly trace again within the embossed lines you just created.

Now place the metal piece, die-cut side up, onto a hard acrylic mat and smooth the background around the design using a paper stump. Place the metal piece back onto the foam board, reverse side up, and gently press the design upwards using the paper stump.

Smooth the background again on the hard acrylic mat, with the stamped side facing up. To ensure that the raised motifs are not crushed, fill them with melted beeswax and let it harden.

Color the image with alcohol inks.
