Frequently asked questions about oil paintings on Kunstplaza

What is oil painting?

Oil painting is a painting technique that oil-based paints . Pigments are mixed with a drying oil as a binder and applied to a canvas. The most common types of oil used in oil paints are linseed oil, walnut oil, poppyseed oil, and safflower oil.

The choice of oil influences the properties of the paint and the final result of the artwork. Different oils can lead to more pronounced yellowing or affect the drying time.

Oil paints, in which the color pigments are dissolved in oil, were first used for panel paintings in Northern Europe in the 13th century and later became popular in Italy, where they were increasingly used on canvas. Oil paints dry slowly and can be mixed, thinned transparently, or textured directly on the canvas.

This flexibility has made them a popular medium for artists for centuries. Originally, artists mixed their own colors; it wasn't until the 1840s that ready-made paints in sealable containers became commercially available.

How can I buy an oil painting?

Alternatively, you can also purchase a figurative or abstract oil painting via the provider's online shop (see external link in the respective artwork).

You have the option of using the filter function in the individual categories to find the right artwork or navigating directly to your desired image using the keyword search.

I found an oil painting, but the size isn't right

Many artists exhibiting with us also offer the option of commissioning a custom oil painting in your desired size (keyword: commissioned work ). It's best to contact the artist directly via message or phone to discuss the details.

Either existing modern oil paintings can be used, or an abstract work of art can be created entirely to your taste.

Does the oil painting come with a frame?

Your picture should be ready to hang directly on the wall. Ideally, your artwork will arrive ready to hang. For international shipments, it is often rolled up to avoid high transport costs.

You can find more details in the description or via the external link in the artwork. If you cannot find this information, we recommend contacting the artist or seller directly.

Stretcher bars or wooden frames – what is the difference?

stretcher frame is generally required for every oil painting to professionally stretch the canvas onto a wooden frame. Many artists use 18 mm deep stretcher frames, which are equipped with cross braces and wedge connectors as needed to ensure the painting hangs securely on your living room wall.

A wooden frame can further enhance an oil painting
A wooden frame can further enhance an oil painting

Although the stretcher frame is not visually visible, many galleries also offer beautiful wooden frames (e.g. a baroque frame or shadow gap frame) that perfectly match your oil painting.

How will the painting be delivered?

The artist or their gallery is responsible for shipping. In our experience, shipping costs depend on the size of the artwork and possibly also on the framing. Large or fragile artworks are often carefully packaged in a special box. This box is made of sturdy plastic and lined with foam to ensure optimal protection.

For small artworks, galleries often use local shipping companies. Check with the artist or their gallery for specific details. With most of the galleries and shops our artists sell through, you can rest assured that all packages are insured and will arrive safely and undamaged.
