Closely linked to Kurt Arentz's fascination with the animal world as a subject for his art was a deep interest in ecological issues. Arentz was therefore delighted when his "Environmental Eagle" was selected by the New York-based committee "Artists for Ecology" as an award for environmentally impactful public figures. The eagle as a motif is a clever choice, as it is a proverbially keen observer of its environment and, at the same time, existentially dependent on it. The 1993 recipient was Prince Charles (now Charles III, King of England). The committee was less concerned with the representative of European high nobility than with Charles the organic farmer and prominent environmental activist, whom the son of Elizabeth II had already long admired. Only one other eagle exists besides the one awarded to King Charles, and it is in the possession of the Arentz family.
