Even as a child, Edvard Munch (1863-1944) spent his summers at his family's holiday home on the Oslofjord. At the age of 35, he acquired his own house, which served as his retreat well into old age. Despite his fame and his residence on a larger estate in Erkely, Munch regularly returned to Åsgårdstrand to live and work. The significance of this place for his art is considerable; the ever-changing light and vibrant colors profoundly influenced his works. In his landscapes of later years, Munch not only produced his psychologically profound masterpieces but also created works of simple beauty, such as "Woman in a Red Dress (Street in Åsgårdstrand)." These paintings are equally groundbreaking and pave the way for Expressionism, both in their use of color and in their composition.
