Ernst Ludwig Kirchner lived in Berlin from 1915 onwards, dedicating himself to the sophisticated urban life, which he depicted in his grotesque style with sharp contours and a pronounced sense of color. However, the First World War brought this phase to an abrupt end: after entering military service, Kirchner suffered a mental breakdown and was discharged in 1917 for health reasons. He sought recuperation in Switzerland and, in a second creative phase, developed into a landscape artist who expressed the alpine landscape with vibrant colors and flowing forms.
