Leonardo da Vinci is considered the greatest universal genius in the history of art and science. As an outstanding representative of the Renaissance man, he combined diverse talents – from painter and sculptor to natural scientist and inventor. Despite his modest education due to his illegitimate birth, he managed to gain a foothold in Verrocchio's workshop and work at important courts such as those of the Duke of Milan and Cesare Borgia. Da Vinci's life's work is characterized by a humanistic worldview and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. His scientific studies, for example on geological formation or water flow, are as impressive as his artistic masterpieces. Works such as "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa" occupy a special place in art history. His pursuit of harmonious compositions paved the way for the High Renaissance, while his later considerations of light and air already raised questions that foreshadowed Baroque painting.
