The Old Testament tells the story of the beautiful and God-fearing widow Judith, who enters the camp of the Nebuchadnezzar general Holofernes unarmed and beheads him with his own sword – a popular motif in art history. Klimt's famous "Golden Judith" is a modern-day femme fatale whose charms could cost many a man his head.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was a leading artist of Viennese Art Nouveau and a co-founder of the Vienna Secession. His "Golden Style," inspired by Byzantine mosaics, is characterized by ornamental areas of color that appear like precious stones against a golden background. In his works, particularly the famous "Kiss," Klimt reflects on the human life cycle and its redemption, subtly combining erotic depictions of the body with geometric patterns. This flat, planar style characterizes Klimt's intensely colorful art from 1905 onward and extends to portraits of wealthy women as well as landscapes.
