"This man will either go mad or leave us all far behind," Camille Pissarro prophesied about Vincent van Gogh, born in 1853 as the son of a pastor. And indeed, the Dutchman would become a pioneer of modern art, ushering in Expressionism with his flowing lines and vibrant colors. While van Gogh barely earned enough money for paint and canvas during his lifetime and was dependent on the support of his brother Theo, his works now regularly fetch tens of millions of euros at spectacular auctions.
