Painting “Apple Tree” (1921) – from the “Seasons Cycle”, version framed in gold

The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was a master at transforming his subjects into symbols of moods and emotions. This applies not only to his most famous works such as "The Scream" or "Madonna," but also to his landscape paintings. Four of his works represent the seasons. Here it is autumn.

Munch depicted autumn using an apple tree whose leaves had already turned yellow.
Original: 1921, oil on canvas, 100 x 130.5 cm, Kunsthaus Zürich.

Elaborately produced on heavy, 250g Gmund Tactile paper, resembling handmade paper. Framed in a high-quality, gold-colored solid wood frame and glazed. Dimensions: 37 x 44 cm (H/W).

About Edvard Munch 1863-1944: The Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch was one of the most important pioneers of Expressionism. His works revolve around the great human tragedies between Eros and death; Munch confronted the deepest human emotions relentlessly and intensely. The oppressive atmosphere of his most famous work, "The Scream," was typical of Munch, who often grappled with life's existential questions in his art, primarily fear, despair, melancholy, grief, death, love, and jealousy. This somber choice of themes certainly reflects his biography: Munch lost his mother and sister at a young age and struggled with depression and alcoholism throughout his life. Like few other artists, Munch was able to give expression to his state of mind and to vividly convey these emotionally powerful themes on canvas. Although he painted representationally, he rendered his subjects peculiarly distorted and employed a highly dynamic painting style with vibrant colors. Edvard Munch's innovative visual language and his way of symbolically representing emotional states made him a pioneer of Expressionism and one of the most important painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.
