Max Pechstein (1881-1955) is one of the most outstanding representatives of German Expressionism. In 1906, he joined the artists' group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), founded by Kirchner and others. Besides his paintings, he created over 850 graphic works, including woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings. The Baltic coast became a source of inspiration for him; in particular, his travels to Nidden on the Curonian Spit from 1909 onward shaped his work. However, the political changes following the Treaty of Versailles made this region inaccessible to him. Searching for a retreat, Pechstein finally found a new creative haven in Łeba, which he subsequently visited regularly during the summer months.
