Max Beckmann (1884-1950) stands as a unique figure within the avant-garde of his time. While modernism pushed painting toward complete abstraction, Beckmann consciously rooted himself in the tradition of the late 19th century. A central motif in his work is the sea, which he once described as his "old friend." Initially, he presented it as a mysterious and vital space of existential experiences; however, during the Nazi era, it transformed into a symbol of freedom, departure, and escape.
