Caspar David Friedrich is considered the most important German Romantic painter, whose introspective connection to nature and religious sensibility make him a prime example of a Romantic artist. His richly detailed paintings radiate a metaphysical transparency, conveying not only external but also inner worlds. His landscapes, in particular, are central to his work and often depict solitary figures gazing longingly into distant scenes—inspired by extensive walks in nature. Through symbolic motifs such as the moon and tree stumps, he expresses romantic and religious feelings. After his training in Copenhagen, Friedrich settled in Dresden, where the creative exchange with poets like Tieck and Schlegel shaped his art. His works reflect emotions inherent in poetry and strive to offer insights into the human soul, as well as to reflect the yearning for eternity within ourselves.
