In his meticulously painted work, Frederick achieved an unparalleled metaphysical transparency: In 1815, Western Pomerania fell to Prussia as part of the Congress of Vienna. Thus, Frederick's romantic harbor scene is also an allegory of this historical event: In the foreground, three people in a rowboat are seen rowing between anchored sailboats towards a ship flying the Swedish flag on the horizon. The entire scene is bathed in a black, red, and gold color scheme: Analogous to the new German flag, these colors symbolize honor, freedom, and fatherland. Original: Circa 1815/16, oil on canvas, 90 x 71 cm, Charlottenhof Palace, Potsdam.
