Giambologna was an outstanding Mannerist artist active during the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. His works are characterized by a blend of local, Michelangelo-esque, and classical influences. As a pupil of Jacques Dubroeucq in Mons, he became a significant master whose workshop produced many talented artists. Giambologna settled in Florence and was appointed court sculptor to the Medici, which spread his fame throughout Europe. His unique oeuvre includes numerous sculptures and statuettes that delighted the high nobility and earned him high honors. Until his death in 1608, Giovanni da Bologna faithfully served the Medici in Florence as their court artist.
