Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932. Before the construction of the Berlin Wall, he left his hometown and continued his art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In a time dominated by abstract art, his photorealistic paintings of family album scenes caused a sensation. Richter is known for constantly searching for new forms of expression and has utilized various styles and media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and performance. Despite his fame, he remains true to himself and prefers to let his art speak for itself. At auction, his painting "Candle" from the 1980s fetched a high price and symbolizes the silent protest of East German citizens against the socialist regime.
