Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, left his hometown before the Berlin Wall was built and continued his art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His photorealistic paintings of family album scenes caused a sensation at a time when abstract art dominated. Richter is known for constantly seeking new forms of expression and has used various styles and media such as painting, sculpture, photography, and performance. Despite his fame, he remains true to himself and prefers to let his art speak for itself. His painting "Candle" from the 1980s fetched a high price at auction and symbolizes the silent protest of East German citizens against the socialist regime.
