Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was an outstanding abstract expressionist and co-founder of the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider). He developed a unique "alphabet of 20th-century art" that emphasized the raw power of color and composition without relying on representational depictions. Kandinsky believed that the mystery of life could only be grasped through the abstract interplay of color and form. Born in Moscow, he devoted himself entirely to art after moving to Munich in 1896, where he founded the "Phalanx" painting school and met Gabriele Münter, his future life partner. Travels through Europe and North Africa broadened his artistic horizons, while an extended period in Murnau had a significant influence on his work.
