Small sculpture “The Threatening Cupid” by Etienne-Maurice Falconet, 1757, cast stone
“The Threatening Cupid”, 1757 (as a small sculpture)
A love story in art history: Falconet's Cupid.
As early as 1755, Falconet presented a plaster model of his Cupid, sparking enthusiasm among the critics of his time. Two years later, it was unveiled as a marble statue, alongside his equally famous work "La Beigneuse." Cupid's finger pointing to his sealed lips promises secrecy. And yet, smiling slyly to himself, he seems aware of his power over every human destiny.
Original: Musée du Louvre, Paris. Marble.
