Abstract mosaic "Kissing Elephants" by Ukata Arua, limited edition reproduction on canvas

Picture “Kissing Elephants”, framed

At first glance, the image appears to be a large-scale, abstract mosaic. Only upon closer inspection does one recognize the form of two elephants facing each other, emerging from the lines meandering across the picture plane and the brightly colored elements. The question of "representational" or "abstractional" does not arise for the artist; his work—like African art throughout history—aims primarily to capture the symbolic, the essential, indeed the very core of nature, within an imaginative representation.

Giclée print on canvas, stretched on a wooden frame. Limited edition of 199 copies, signed and numbered on the back. Frame size 100 x 100 cm.

Ukata Arua was born in Nigeria in 1977, the son of the King of Amaekpu Ohafia and a German mother. He received his artistic training at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. In his lacquer and acrylic works, he reinterprets ancient African art traditions in an impressive way.
