According to a somewhat tongue-in-cheek saying, Picasso changed his partners as often as he changed his painting styles. For one of the most versatile artists in art history, who both shaped and influenced styles and movements of an entire century, that's saying something. The fact is: women fascinated him throughout his life—also as a subject in his works—and he fascinated women throughout his life. His portraits and his homages to femininity are countless. "Buste de Femme (Jacqueline)": When Picasso met her, she was a ceramics saleswoman in Vallauris, where Picasso had been creating ceramic works since 1946—and 46 years younger than him. The artist portrays the 36-year-old as a blossoming beauty and, in emphasizing her eyes, employs one of the oldest "tricks" in art history: Jacqueline, gazing precisely straight ahead, follows the viewer, regardless of their angle to the painting.
