It is believed to be over 3,600 years old, making it the oldest known depiction of the night sky: The bronze disc, unearthed in July 1999 near Nebra in Saxony-Anhalt, is now considered one of the most valuable treasures of cultural history. The Nebra Sky Disc is a key find for European prehistory. Anyone viewing this unique artifact for the first time immediately recognizes the sun, moon, and stars. The Sky Disc is the only object from such an early period that exhibits such striking connections to astronomy. In 2012, it was decided to include it in the "List of Nationally Valuable Cultural Assets." Since June 2013, the Sky Disc has been a World Heritage Site—a status granted to it by UNESCO.
