William Turner (1775–1851) was an outstanding English oil and watercolor painter who specialized in landscapes, history paintings, and seascapes. Even at a young age, he distinguished himself through technical perfection and became a member of the Royal Academy. His experimental approach and his engagement with Goethe's theory of colors led to a decisive shift in his style. Turner boldly challenged tradition by devoting himself intensively to the effects of light and movement. Despite harsh criticism for his innovative painting style, his precise understanding of nature and dynamic use of light laid the foundation for the Impressionists and modern painting. The majority of his works are now housed in the Tate Gallery in London.
