Bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin “The Cathedral” (1908), version in art bronze, reduction
Sculpture “The Cathedral” (1908), version in artificial bronze
The name of the soaring Gothic cathedral derives from the Greek word kathedra, meaning "seat of God." For the sculptor Rodin, hands were the epitome of creative, divine power. Without touching one another, they encompass the space in which the idea, the divine spark, is born, like a dance of hands. With his study, Rodin elevates the fragment to a complete sculpture, thus anticipating large areas of modern sculpture.

François-Auguste-René Rodin is considered a brilliant innovator of sculpture and, alongside Praxiteles, Michelangelo, Cellini, and Canova, ranks among the greatest sculptors of all time. His sculptural output is so extensive that a complete catalogue of his works has yet to be published. It would certainly comprise several hundred pages.
