Paul Wunderlich, like few other artists of our time, was one of the truly style-defining artists of modernism. As recently as 1960, the Hamburg public prosecutor's office confiscated his works as "offensive." Three years later, the still-young Paul Wunderlich was appointed professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. Numerous awards, such as the Edwin Schaff Prize and honors at graphic arts biennials in Ireland, Taiwan, and Bulgaria, brought Wunderlich international acclaim. He was the only German artist to be admitted to the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. Paul Wunderlich lived and worked alternately in Hamburg and France until his death in June 2010.
