Hundertwasser dedicated himself to architecture from the 1950s onward. On the occasion of the inauguration of the Hundertwasser House in Vienna (1986), he stated: "We are once again experiencing a turning point, where old and rigid values ​​in architecture and urban planning are increasingly being questioned. The straight lines and uniformity of Bauhaus architecture are coming to an end, for they are insensitive, sterile, cold, heartless, aggressive, and unemotional. The era of absolute rationalism is drawing to a close. The new values ​​are an increased quality of life, not a standard of living. A longing for romance, individuality, creativity—especially creativity—and a life in harmony with nature." In Friedensreich Hundertwasser, our era has found its most formidable challenger of totalitarian thinking, whether concerning nuclear energy, genetic engineering, environmental protection, or the design of our living spaces. Hundertwasser lived entirely in accordance with his vision and in opposition to the contradictions of post-industrial society. Hundertwasser's significance lies in his art, which brings forth beauty: a message of natural harmony, peace, and joy.
