Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a founding member of the artists' group "Brücke" and is considered one of the most important representatives of Expressionism. His oeuvre comprises around 30,000 paintings, drawings, sketches, and sculptures. When a person's fear becomes overwhelming and their life's purpose is not only threatened but also taken away, they often see only one way out: self-inflicted death. This was the fate of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who ended his life with a pistol shot on June 15, 1938, on the alpine pasture above Davos. Beforehand, however, he destroyed his printing blocks and a large portion of his sculptures out of fear of the German invasion.
