Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) is a household name in Denmark and Norway. The Norwegian-Danish painter from Skagen is an icon of Nordic Impressionism. At the age of 14, Krøyer entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a young artist, from 1877 to 1881, he undertook extensive travels to Spain, Italy, and especially France, where he studied the Impressionists in Paris. In the summer of 1882, Krøyer first came to Skagen, where he spent every summer thereafter, becoming the leading figure of the local artists' colony. His paintings depict the carefree life of the artists, their celebrations, walks on the beach, and atmospheric moonlit evenings.
