Johannes Vermeer is among the most outstanding Dutch painters of the Baroque era. His significant artistic career can be traced through his baptism on October 31, 1632, in Delft and his burial there on December 15, 1675. At a time when Delft did not yet have a formal painting school, Vermeer, the son of a silk weaver, art dealer, and innkeeper, received a practical training that prepared him for his later path as an artist. His entry into the Delft Guild of Saint Luke in 1650 testifies to his active work as a painter. Only 37 of his paintings are known to exist today. Vermeer primarily devoted himself to genre painting; portraits and religious works are rare in his oeuvre. The interior scenes in his paintings radiate an atmosphere of stillness, security, and inner peace. Through the skillful application of subtle color harmonies and refined shading, the painter achieved these unique effects. He was also a master of foreshortening, which lends his works an impressive sense of spatial depth. His genre paintings typically depict only a few figures and often carry symbolic meaning – a characteristic that has fueled interest in Vermeer's art for centuries. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of this extraordinary artist and discover the timeless beauty of his works!
